It’s a Valiant Comics’ tribute issue as the DC universe display parallels of the Valiant comic book universe starting with a cover called Magnus Robot Hunted. Magnus the creator of the Metal Men here is a symbolic stand in for Valiant’s Magnus Robot Fighter, the futuristic man whose mission is to destroy evil robots. Elsewhere, Luthor who has been controlling young super humans like Harbinger Corporation’s Hiroto Harada, is facing off against DC’s Solar Man of the Atom stand in, aptly named Super Nova.
Steel, a stand in for Valiant’s X-O-Man-O-War, the armoured fighter gets to meet a man who’s been tricked by Luthor’s new meta-human gene treatment. And not to be undone, a new Native fighter whose ancestor has been seen fighting dinosaurs to protect his people, has been given the power of the Super-Chief. The Super-Chief is not a stand in for the Apache Chief. Nope, he’s a stand in for Turok, Dinosaur Hunter!
Enough with the Valiant comparison. Whether on purpose or not, recent issues of 52 have drawn from a variety of comic book and literary sources. It’s interesting to see the writers make their universe as large and comprehensive as those from other companies, even if some situations look a little borrowed. The giant robot at the end of the story is too similar to one of Marvel’s sentinels.
The artwork is decent, while not being spectacular. The short origin of Green Lantern Hal Jordan looks good, though. He looks much younger while retaining his traditional looks.
