Leading the Eisner Award nominees in today’s announcement is the critically acclaimed juggernaut of introspective storytelling that is David Mazzuccheilli’s Asterios Polyp (Pantheon). The groundbreaking graphic novel comes away with four nominations in all, including Best Graphic Album (new) and Best Writer/Artist.

Closely trailing behind Mazzuccheilli’s magnum opus are books like Mike Carey and Peter Gross’ metaphysical thriller The Unwritten (Vertigo), Darwyn Cooke’s graphic adaptation of Richard Stark’s Parker: The Hunter (IDW), Yoshihiro Tatsumi’s manga title A Drifting Life (Drawn & Quarterly), Naoki Urasawa’s two manga masterpieces 20th Century Boys and Pluto: Urasawa X Tezuka (VIZ), and Mark Waid and Peter Kraus’ Irredeemable (BOOM!) just to name a few. French books My Mommy Is in America and She Met Buffalo Bill (Fanfare) and The Photographer (First Second) also garnered three nominations each.

The whole of the nominations were rounded out by superhero books as comics like Old Man Logan (Marvel), the Geoff Johns’ event Blackest Night (DC), and Invincible Iron Man (Marvel) as well as others received several nods. J.H. Williams III’s virtuosic imagery on Detective Comics (DC) was also rightfully acknowledged with two nominations.
