Once again, the blazing work of visionary science fiction writer and novelist Philip K. Dick returns to the screen. This time, his 1954 short story “The Golden Man” becomes the new film, Next, directed by Lee Tamahori (Once Were Warriors, Die Another Day) and starring Oscar-winner Nicolas Cage (Leaving Las Vegas), Oscar-nominee Julianne Moore (Far From Heaven, The Hours), and not-hard-on-the-eyes Jessica Biel (The Illusionist).
Cris Johnson (Nicolas Cage) is a Las Vegas magician with a secret gift that is both a blessing and a curse to him. He has the uncanny ability to know what will happen next because he can see a few minutes into the future. Sick of both the examinations he underwent as a child and of the interest the government and medical establishment in his power, Cris lies low under an assumed name in Vegas. There, his extrasensory talent comes in handy in his job as a magician and mentalist in a seedy Vegas club where he performs nightly. He makes a living off cheap tricks and off his gambling winnings at the blackjack table (where he uses his power when he needs extra cash).

Some eyes, however, have been taking notice of Cris’ talent and dexterity with the portal of time. They don’t consider this to be a mere parlor trick, and Vegas security guards are watching through casino floor cameras, eager to figure out Cris’ knack for consistently beating the odds. Also, Callie Ferris (Julianne Moore), an FBI counter-terror agent is eager to tap Cris’ brain to help thwart a terrorist group’s planned attack on Los Angeles with a weapon of mass destruction. She uses all her wiles to capture him and then convince him to help her stop this planned cataclysm.
With a nuclear time bomb ticking, Cris could be the key in averting a nuclear holocaust. Now, he has to use his powers to back-channel through the right portals and change the present or his future and the future of hundreds of thousands will be a thing of the past.
