Marvel is celebrating its 50th volume of Marvel Masterworks by placing the spotlight on the character with the company’s namesake, Captain Marvel!

This anniversary edition of Marvel Masterworks recounts how Captain Marvel went from Kree Captain to Earth defender. It also collects his greatest battles against such terrifying foes as the Super-Skrull, Prince Namor of Atlantis, Sentry #459, and Quasimodo the Living Computer.

"I can't think of a more Mar-vellous choice for the 50th Masterworks volume! After 49 books, to see Marvel digging into the stories of the Kree captain- one of the very small handful of characters to get their own title in the latter part of Marvel's Silver Age- is very heartening to me as a Masterworks fan. It clearly shows how committed they are to the line of books, and I couldn't be happier. These are some fun stories and it'll be the cosmic event of the year to get to relive them!" says John Thomas, of MarvelMasterworks.com

Crafted by legendary creators Stan Lee, Roy Thomas, Gene Colan, Don Heck, and Arnold Drake, Marvel Masterworks: Captain Marvel Vol.1 contains one of the Marvel Universe’s greatest Silver Age tales.

For protecting the people of Earth, the Kree Captain Mar-vell is labeled a traitor to his people by the vicious Colonel Yon-Rogg. To blend in on his new adopted home Earth, Mar-vell assumes the human identity of Walter Lawson and chooses to defend his new home against all interplanetary threats.

Mar-vell evens finds love on Earth as he becomes smitten with Carol Danvers, the woman who would later become Ms. Marvel, in her very first appearance.

“The Masterworks program started back in 1987. It got off to a great start then sort of disappeared after a few starts and stops. It is a great pleasure to know that in the last year we’ve managed to restart the program and to start adding in other silver age titles beyond just the obvious. 2006 will be an exciting year as we continue to add Golden Age titles, Western, and Monster titles to the mix…as well as twelve more Silver Age editions,” said David Gabriel, Marvel’s Director of Sales.

This 50th volume of Marvel Masterworks re-telling the cosmic legend of Captain Marvel collects Marvel Superheroes #12, 13 and Captain Marvel (Vol. 1) #1-9.
