She has known many identities: a Celtic enchantress, oracle in the court of Kublai Kahn, advisor to Marie Antoinette and fortune-teller in present day New York.  Now Vertigo, the critically acclaimed publisher of Sandman, Preacher, Fables and Y The Last Man, will detail the complex origins of one of DC Comics’ most fascinating, enigmatic characters with MADAME XANADU, a new ongoing comic book series written by Matt Wagner (GRENDEL, MAGE) and illustrated by Amy Hadley (FOOL’S GOLD). The project was announced today by Karen Berger, the Senior Vice President and Executive Editor of Vertigo, during the San Diego Comic Convention.

Told as a gothic romance and interweaving elements of history and mythology, MADAME XANADU revisits famous legends and stories of different eras through Madame Xanadu’s personal history and her odd connection to the mysterious Phantom Stranger. Who is she? How did she come to be known as Madame Xanadu? Why is she connected to so many of history’s most important figures? For the first time these secrets will be revealed.
