MU #1

By Koncise an out :)

Long ago the dark god Secneum came to Mu, destroying all who stood in his path. Only the daring of two heroic wizards stopped him; together they defeated his armies and saved the world. Now, a thousand years later, a scholar has discovered that the shadow lord’s prison is weakening; Secneum is coming back. But can a simple librarian convince the feuding nations of Mu to band together? Or is it already too late?

This was an extremely enjoyable first issue. We get a lot of current and back story which really enhances the experience for the reader. It is the execution as well. We start in the past then make the jump, but it’s the way the transition happens, very Princess Bride. The story itself seems to be that of standard fantasy telling, but its not trying to hard to be something else which is nice. We get a clue of a potential threat, which is kind of telegraphed, but maybe it’s a red herring.

The art here is very nice and really seems to fit the fantasy setting. It has a washed out that seems to add depth in a lot of places. There is a nice level of intricacy which comes from the addition of a background artist. The colours work well and only in a couple of places they seem garish. Facial expressions and body language are portrayed well and strength is projected with the larger than life appearance of some characters. A nice addition is the character sketch concepts at the back.
