This new title promises to give a story not strictly tied to any particular continuity but stressing the "iconic" aspects of the premier superhero. It opens with Superman rescuing a group of scientists whose space craft is falling into the sun. But slowly, we learn that this was all engineered by Lex Luthor as part of a scheme to finally destroy Superman. To see how Morrison has combined the various versions of Superman into one version, just look at Luthor who is presented here as the criminal scientist of the Silver Age but who retains the suave arrogance of the evil billionaire that is the modern-day Luthor. We also get a return of the bumbling, sympathetic Clark Kent whose secret identity is still a mystery to his true love, Lois Lane. It all feels strangely familiar like having old friends show up out of nowhere. What does feel out of place is this bizarre billionaire-benefactor of Superman who has artificial life-forms working for him. This character really feels like an escapee from Morrison's other books. The fact that Superman so easily accepts the bio-engineering of human beings also does not seem in character. The art has a distinct look to it, giving a sense of Superman's power and the scope of the story. Quitley's art, especially his facial expressions have always divided the fans. But once you get over how different they are from the usual depictions of the Superman cast, the story moves along quite well.
