Cisco (Carlos Valdes) gets to star in this week’s episode of the Flash, since Barry (Grant Gustin) and Iris (Candice Patton) are taking a beach vacation. Although that seems a bit odd, given that Ramsay Rosso (Sendhil Ramamurthy) has become the villain Bloodwork and the Crisis is approaching, the pair want to spend some quality time together before the Flash’s foretold death.

Turns out it’s not the Flash’s death that winds up driving the episode. Instead, Breacher (Danny Trejo) returns, wanting Cisco’s help to find the murderer of his daughter, Gypsy.

The mystery is a pretty good one, and the suspect I pegged towards the start turned out to not be the killer, which is always a good thing. I have always enjoyed Valdes’ performance as Cisco, so it was nice to see him being given so much screen time. The death of Gypsy, whose relationship with Cisco had ended long before, does give the actor some good emotional play. A level of grief that is lower than her father’s, but still there.

The Crisis plot does develop a bit, as Joe West (Jesse L Martin) trails Nash Wells (Tom Cavanagh) into the sewers, trying to find out what he has been up to down there. The two men wind up getting trapped, and we learn a bit more about the latest Wells. It’s downright impressive how many variations of the character this show has come up with, and how well Cavanagh has brought each of them to life.

Still, I have to admit this feels a bit like filler, with the absence of the Flash. I’m just glad that the filler was enjoyable on its own merits.

Rating: 9.5/10
