I have very mixed feelings about James Tynion’s story in Kamandi Challenge 4. For the first half of this issue, it was grating on me, and I wasn’t enjoying even the elements that I ought to have. Then, in the second half, it kicked into high gear, and I wound up just loving the ending. Carlos D’Anda’s art is excellent throughout, and I had no problems at all with that.

I have to admit that Tynion found a very clever way out of the cliffhanger from the previous issue. That’s not where my problem lies at all. No, it all has to do with the things he chose to pull in from the original series.

In this issue, we get to meet Professor Cano. To me, that is just so evocative of Dr. Canus, from the original series. But the characters could not possibly be further apart. If Tynion had no intention of making one think of Dr. Canus, then perhaps he could have chosen a name that was further from it. It really did, single handedly, ruin the first 13 pages of the story for me.

But then, as I had given up hope of not cringing through the rest of the issue, we are transported to Australia The final storyline of the original series took place on that continent, and, like the latter half of this issue, involves the Wondrous Western Wall, and the Kanga Rat Murder Society. This part of the story I loved just as much as I disliked the earlier part.

Perhaps I am being silly. As I write this review, and look back over the issue, I realize that, had that one character been given a different name, I would be writing another over the top, oh my gosh I love this Kamandi is the greatest thing ever review, as I am prone to do.
