I haven’t been pleased with the last few issues of Justice League Odyssey, but I have to credit Dan Abnett with putting the series back on track. Or perhaps creating and defining the track.

Darkseid explains his schemes, the reasons for them, the reasons for his lies, how there came to be a planet worshipping Cyborg, and pretty much everything that has been strange and confusing, weaving it all together into a coherent plot. I’m impressed. I guess Abnett was fortunate in having Darkseid part of the story, but it still couldn’t have been easy making sense of this odd book.

I’m still bristling over the planet of Azraels, but now that’s a minor point, as opposed to one of many.

I also like the way Jessica Cruz has been written here. Starfire, Cyborg, and Azrael are all essential to Darkseid’s plan. Green Lantern is not. Jessica’s overall story arc has seen her deal with feelings of insecurity, and this might have shattered her spirit. Certainly it would have a few years earlier. But having her accept the situation, but insist on continuing to be a part of it, shows the strength of character that she has achieved.

The art is good, particularly on the battle scenes, as Blackfire leads the forces of Tamaran and Azrael-world against Darkseid and his new allies.

It feels like it’s been a long time since I actually enjoyed an issue of this book. Longer than the 8 issues it’s been around, honestly. I am so relieved to be able to finally write a positive review about one.

Rating: 8/10
