Dan Abnett and Vicente Cifuentes bring the Earth 2 Society series to a conclusion in this issue. It’s a pleasant enough tale, and it all looks just great, but it is far from a gripping ending.

Essentially, it’s all one long farewell, which catches up with all the characters, and lets us see how their lives went on, now that all the big drama is over. But the best thing I can say about this story is that at least the tale is over.

I had so loved the first Earth 2 book, and even the start of Earth 2 Society was really promising. But it seems very clear that this book should have ended about six months ago. For a very long time now, it has felt like the story was just dragging on and on, for no clear reason.

No, that’s not quite true. There was a clear reason, just not a very good one. The original Justice Society are due to return in Rebirth, an event already spread far and wide across the web. DC seems to have been motivated solely by financial interests in keeping the Earth 2 Society book going until that was ready to take place.

I admit, a number of the characters from this version have really grown on me, particularly Val-Zod. I think I would have found the new Fury also quite interesting, had there been more time to really develop her. But all the characters got caught in the long, long finale story, and I began to lose interest in all of them.

This is likely the last time we will see the New 52 Earth 2 characters, at least for a few years, until reality changes again. I wish they had been given a stronger farewell.
