Captain America #29

The Winter Soldier continues to look for clues about the assassination of Captain America, hoping to exact vengeance on his mentor’s murderers. But wherever he goes, others follow. Captain America’s former associates, Sharon Carter and the Falcon are hot on the Winter Soldier’s trail, although quite a few steps behind. However, the Black Widow is on the trail of both Carter and The Falcon. As the Winter Soldier finally confronts the Red Skull, will he be able to pull the trigger on the villain?

This story is split in smaller chapters covering the various players in the aftermath of the death of Captain America. This issue is more about housekeeping the plot barely advances. Not a bad story per se, the pace only serves to set up the cliffhanger at the end of the story. The story points exposed during the story are not superfluous or padded elements, but they are not essential to the story. If the intrigue was not so engrossing, removing this story from the overall picture of the aftermath of the death of Captain America, would be easy.

Epting continues to master his art and delivers good and varied bits of life into the characters’ lives. He really is the right choice for the film noir aspect of this story. His art also meshes well with the narrative developed by Brubaker. With Epting on board, the Captain America series is on the verge of becoming one of these masterpieces where art and story intertwine so much with one another that they speak from one unique voice.
