Created by a husband and wife combo dubbed Doton Yamaki, Breathe Deeply originally saw publication in 2010. The work is a deeply engaging and reflective look on the meaning of love and those affected by its loss. The volume also sprinkles in a contemplative look at the use of stem cell research in medical practices. The story of two young men whose relationship with a woman named Yuko is cut short when she passes away from a heart condition is a bitter one. This is further expounded upon following the pair’s experiences with their study into the stem cells and how it can be used to save, or even create a new heart.
The issues that arise between the two construct arguments for the pros and cons of its ethics and whether stem cell research is a moral approach to saving lives. Just as they competed for the love of Yuko, the two take their battle to the scientific community, convinced that their ideas are the future of medical research. Just as the story is a commentary on love and lost love, the work can also be seen as a commentary on the complexity of stem cell research. Doton Yamaki does an exceptional job of presenting clear arguments to both sides of the debate through their characters struggles.
Breathe Deeply is another magnificent release from One Peace Books. The manga is a melodramatic affair, written in compelling fashion that draws readers in and doesn’t just tug at the heart strings but rips at them. The subtext of the use of stem cells provides an interesting examination of the medical industry and the motives behind its use. The characters are complex without feeling contrived. One Peace has another success on its hands and if Breathe Deeply is any indication, I can’t wait to see what the company delivers next.
