It's quite clear that former Flash artist Kolins was happy with his initial exclusivity at Marvel when asked why he's re-upping that deal. "I had a really good time working with them for the last 2 years; why not keep that going?! In fact, I think we've only just begun to figure out the best books for me to work on, so it's wonderful to stay here at Marvel and build on top of what we've already done. I am Really looking forward to the next few years!"
Kolins spent his important formative years as a penciller at Marvel and was part of the famed "Romita's Raiders", a loose apprenticeship under legendary Marvel artist John Romita Sr. Later, at DC, he hit his stride with his long tenure on Flash (with writer Geoff Johns). "I still draw as many Flash sketches at cons as anything else," says Kolins. "The fans are great, and I'm thankful to each and every one of them."
At Marvel, the artist has produced some of his best and most varied work, including Hulk/Wolverine: Six Hours, The Thing: Freakshow, Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, and most recently on the acclaimed Marvel Team-up, with writer Robert Kirkman. Up next for this busy guy is a certain golden-tressed Thunder God…
"Thor: Blood Oath is my gig now," shouts Kolins, in a deep, rumbly voice. "And I'm having an absolute blast. I'm a big Thor fan and love mythology stories - which this one is steeped in. Giant eagles, trees that encompass the universe, trolls, magical weapons and arduous quests - I've been waiting my entire career for a book like this! Mike Oeming is writing some really fun stuff and Wil Quintana (EMH) is brilliantly coloring me again."
Although Thor: Blood oath may sound like the be-all-and-end-all of Kolins' dream projects, he's still able to be prodded into opening up on a bit more of what lies in his mind's eye: "Writing and drawing a HULK book that sold a gazillion copies," he sighs. He also admits to wanting to write some comic himself and plans to make that a reality soon.
"I think it's so cool that Scott is this happy at Marvel and wanted to stay on with us," remarks Marvel Editor-In-Chief Joe Quesada. "Who says this ain't the Happy Age of Marvel Comics?"
MarvelEditor Tom Brevoort has nothing but good to say about Kolins' past andfuture with the House of Ideas. "Scott's really been upping his game hereat Marvel, on projects like Avenger: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, and Thor: Blood Oath, soI'm ecstatic that we're able to keep him in the fold, and expect great thingsfrom him over the next few years."
