Hawkman # 47 DC Comics WRITER: Jimmy Palmiotti, Justin Gray ARTISTS: Chris Batista COVER: Adam Kubert
Hawkman and Hawkgirl with Adam Strange alongside them, leap headfirst into the Rann-Thanagar war, taking on various alien races invading Rann. There seems to be no strategy though as Hawkman justs goes around smashing people. Some unexpected faces show up during the battle, a nice twist perhaps but also a rather glaring contrivance. Even with the thousands of warriors seen in the pages, the story feels rather thin. You can have exciting action and still have a moving story. But when you have a battalion of aliens wiped out by a sudden "zap" that comes out of nowhere, then it is hard to take the violence seriously. The art shines however in capturing the details of the vast conflict although the weak points are the panels where Batista resorts to using huge, silhouettes of the antagonists. This may be intended to evoke awe but they are poorly used and look like the artist just got lazy that day. Adam Kubert's cover also does the comic no favours. Just what is Hawkman doing there? Preparing to smash his own groin? The elder Kubert did covers that were twice as breath-taking and which also whetted the reader's appetite to see what lay within the comic's pages.
