DC COMICS
WRITER: John Byrne
PENCILS: John Byrne
INKS: Doug Hazlewood
COVER: John Byrne
The story arc that John Byrne began in JLA #94 finally ends in DOOM PATROL #2, and while the first issue of the new DP series was a little flat, this issue picks up considerably. Byrne can certainly deliver an action-packed comic with multiple sub-plots and foreshadowing of plots to come. He's old school in the sense that he can write in one issue what some take three to do. Still, some writers make those three issues three superb superhero comics, which may be better than one "blah" comic.
That may be the problem with some of Byrne's current work. Some of it seems like an average version of what worked in 80's comics, and while it's at least mildly entertaining, this kind of work may not survive the current market.
As for the art, DP is the least of Byrne's recent efforts, and it's consistently inconsistent from one panel to the next. One frame might have a nice touch, but the next will be, at best, functional. Ultimately, Byrne's Doom Patrol is a workman like effort that doesn't suck, nor does it stand out, but I'll keep watching. C+
