I really enjoyed Gerard Way’s earlier run of Doom Patrol, but this run is already blowing that one away. He seems to have a much firmer grip on the characters, both old and new, and is developing a story that I really don’t understand yet, but am totally enjoying the ride.

It is impossible to discuss the latest issue without giving credit, and perhaps bowing down, to the artist, James Harvey. There is a page towards the end of the issue, when Lotion gives a cuddle, that is an astounding blend of text and imagery. It made me just stop and peruse it for quite a while, in order to make sure I wasn’t missing anything.

Mind you, by that point in the story I had already done so, and for a much longer period. I am sucker for theme parks, like Disneyland, and have always loved the maps of the parks, with their component lands and various rides. Why I am suddenly digressing on this? Because this issue includes such a map. Of Dannyland!

Honestly, the Dannyland map is worth the price of the entire issue, and is packed with loads of hilarious commentary. I must have easily spent fifteen minutes or more reading all the captions and exploring the world. I almost forgot that I was in the middle of a story, and that there was more to come.

Some big changes take place for a couple of the characters as well. One of those is Cliff Steele, and I don’t think I’m really giving anything away by stating that, not for anyone who read the first issue. The other is a much more surprising change, but one whose potential delights me.

It’s all so weird and bizarre and downright fun. This is Doom Patrol at its best, no two ways about it.
