Watchmen is really getting into its groove. The fourth episode brings Laurie Blake (Jean Smart) and Angela Abar (Regina King) together to work on the murder of the police chief, although Angela is none too happy about that situation.
The scenes with the two women are an interesting battle of wills. Generally when there is this much tension and resentment the motivations of the characters are directly opposed. Here, both women have the same overall goal, yet this in no way makes it easier for them to work with each other.
That’s partly because Abar has her own mystery to solve, about her heritage and connection to the man who claims to have murdered the chief. Laurie is always one step ahead of Abar, and her determination to keep this facet of the investigation to herself adds to the friction between them.
We also meet a new character whose importance quickly becomes apparent, Lady Trieu (Hong Chau). There are a few mysteries circling the self proclaimed trillionaire, not the least of which is the purpose behind the massive not-just-a-clock that she has constructed.
I am so impressed at how the show manages to provide us with some utterly bizarre scenes, such as the baby harvesting that Adrian Veidt (Jeremy Irons) does in order to re-staff his estate, and yet at the same time keeps the series so very grounded. The conversation that Angela has with her husband (Yahya Abdul-Mateen) about Laurie’s questioning of him has such nuance, and the actors do a superb job with it, but it’s all very low key and commonplace.
Each episode increases my enjoyment, and my admiration for how this series is being told.
