Uncanny X-Men #520

The Uncanny X-Men chase the last predator that was launched on Utopia a few issues ago to determine who sent it on them and spread the nanites that have been spying on the mutants. But before Wolverine, Colossus and Psylocke can find anything worthwhile, Fantomex has arrived on scene, screwing up their battle plans. Can the creator of the predators be found despite the interruption?

I like some parts of this story and others I didn’t. I like the confrontation Cyclops had with Magneto, not trusting the man and his plans. But I did not like the logic of the remaining predator being across the United States in New York. There’s a logic problem. How did it get there? And how did the X-Men figure out that nanites were being used to spy on them? I must have missed that revelation. I have the feeling that this series definitely is not the one where Fraction puts his best. I keep wondering how he can create something wonderful with Iron Man every month yet fail with the X-Men. Perhaps his work on the X-Men is more indicative of his real talent.

Land is back as the regular artist and fortunately, he avoids a lot of his common poses which had made his work seemed cliché and stale. Here he actually provides original panel construction and storytelling not aimed at making female characters look pretty (while having no hips of course) but more about making sense of the story he was given. If there is one caveat it’s how he draws Colossus with these humongous arms that make him look fat instead of built. Colossus is not a football player type. He’s just super built and fit tall guy.
