While I did enjoy the scenes in this week’s episodes of Titans, I cannot give this an unmixed review. So much of the season has been devoted to the Deathstroke family that this episode, which did not deal with them at all, felt lacking.

But instead of complaining about what was not there, let’s look at what was. The Titans have split, and this episode follows three separate storylines: Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites) in prison, Raven (Teagan Croft) avoiding Wonder Girl (Conor Leslie), and Beast Boy (Ryan Potter) searching for Superboy (Joshua Orpin).

Dick Grayson’s storyline managed to avoid most of the usual tropes for a hero in prison. As Dick had been a police officer in the past, one of the guards hopes to use him to spy on the other prisoners, but Dick refuses. His cell mates are illegal immigrants, caught between the gangs that want to kill them back home, and the ones in prison who threaten to do the same unless they kill Dick. It’s a low key but intense plot thread, which is also serving to introduce the concept of Nightwing, here envisioned as a Corto Maltese legendary figure.

Raven runs out on Donna Troy and winds up making a new friend at a soup kitchen. I think the girl that Raven meets is being harassed by her pimp, but I might be misreading that. This thread develops nicely, with Raven going into action to protect the girl, unaware of exactly how powerful she has become since gaining her father’s demonic powers.

In the Beast Boy/Superboy storyline, both wind up getting captured by Mercy Graves (Natalie Gumede), as does Krypto. I have to admit, I am really enjoying the way Krypto is being used, much better than I could have expected. Gumede is also doing an excellent job as Mercy, and it’s easy to understand why the young heroes are coming to trust her, as poor a decision as that may be.

But I was hoping for more about Deathstroke and crew. I guess I will have to wait another week for that.
