The previous episode of Titans revealed the circumstances behind the death of Jericho, the truth of which only Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites) knew. He finishes telling the rest of the team about it at the top of this episode, and the news does not go over well.

Jericho’s death had caused the original team to split up, and the truth behind it has much the same effect. The members go their separate ways, leaving only Beast Boy (Ryan Potter) behind at the Titans Tower, to care for the still-comatose Superboy (Joshua Orpin).

It feels like the episode is going to be a real downer, with an opening like that, but surprisingly there are a lot of fun, upbeat moments as it plays out. A lot of that is thanks to Potter, whose Beast Boy is able to sustain a goofy, bubbly mood better than the other heroes. He may not be the best person to act as a guide for the tabula rasa clone once Superboy wakes up, but it’s all fun and games until someone loses an eyeball.

No one actually loses an eyeball, by the way. But things turn out just as bad.

In fact, much of the episode takes us on emotional roller coasters. Hawk & Dove (Alan Ritchson & Minka Kelly) have a great scene at a karaoke bar, but yet again the mood sours before the night has passed.

Blackfire (Damaris Lewis) makes her debut, as Kory Anders (Anna Diop) has to deal with her sister’s power grab back on Tamaran. With only one episode left in the season, I am expecting that these scenes were more of a set up for season three, rather than for some abrupt resolution next week.

The climax of this year’s story is clearly going to centre on Deathstroke (Esai Morales). He gets a brief scene in this week’s show, and there is something odd about it. I’m still holding to my theory that Jericho is possessing his father. I guess we’ll find out in the finale.

Rating: 9 /10
