The Unexpected #7 Review

Well, I’m happy. Once again I get to comment on how unexpected some of the events in the latest issue of The Unexpected were. So long as I can easily find a justification for using that particular word in each review I write, the series is doing exactly what it ought to do.

Orlando and Cliquet turn in an action heavy issue this time around. Hawkman joins Firebrand and Neon as they fight against Mandraak, but then the Bad Samaritan gets involved, and the battle becomes more complex.

There is some discussion dealing with the new metal the heroes have discovered, but by and large this one puts aside the development of that storyline, and just allows the various characters to fight over it.

I am a big supporter of sight-based issues, so long as they come after sufficient build up of the plot and characters. Here, they have done their groundwork, and so I can sit back and just enjoy the violence and bloodshed.

Because, make no mistake about it, the fight in this issue turns pretty vicious, and it sure doesn’t look like everyone survives. And of course I am not going to tell you who looks to be in danger of death. The surprise is just part of the fun.

I’m consistently impressed with this book. It just keeps taking itself in directions I wasn’t prepared for. Hard to keep that sort of thing up, issue after issue, but so far, so good.
