The Unexpected #1 Review

The Unexpected is a title with a long history at DC.

Originally Tales of the Unexpected, it was one of their hit science fiction books in the 50s, and home to the Space Ranger series for many years, as well as Automan and the Green Glob. Later, shortening the title to The Unexpected, it became a horror book, and was home to strips for Johnny Peril and Madame Xanadu. About ten years ago there was a Tales of the Unexpected miniseries, which featured the Spectre, and a great back up series for Dr Thirteen.

None of that really has anything to do with the new book, but I felt like sharing it anyway.

That’s partly because I am not entirely sure what to make of this book.
As I started reading it, it reminded me an awful lot of the first issue for The Immortal Men. We have a new, younger hero, Firebrand, who is being attacked by the Bad Samaritan. A group of more experienced heroes come to rescue her, and by this point I was sure I was going to be reading a superhero team book.

Nope, I was wrong.

The story moves in directions other than the one I was expecting. OK, I will just admit it. It goes in unexpected directions.

There appears to be groundwork laid to tie this in with the forthcoming Hawkman book, but aside from that, I just don’t know what to make of it.

And, for this issue at least, I am totally cool with that. I might not be, had the book had a different title, but it is The Unexpected, so they best live up to it.

The art, by the way, is just stunning. The first page is devoted to a close up of the Bad Samaritan, and it was so vibrant and powerful I just had to stop and look at it for a while before really commencing to read the story itself.

The three writers have certainly set themselves a challenge with this debut issue. The series could go on to blow one’s mind, or it could sink into suckiness really fast. Not sure which one will happen, but I am happy to take the ride and find out.
