Supergirl #31 Review

This week’s issues of Superman and Supergirl are inextricably linked. They both chart the battle between Superman, Supergirl, and Superboy against Rogol Zaar. Indeed, some scenes are duplicated precisely between the two books. It’s not that either issues actually comes before the other, but I would suggest that Superman be read first, as the story in Supergirl tends to skip over some of the important events from Superman, rather than vice versa.

But that is not to say that Andreyko, Maguire, and Pansica’s work is in any way secondary. This issue of Supergirl expands on the reunion the three Kryptonians have before facing Rogol Zaar, and highlight Supergirl’s actions during the battle. As well, the latter part of each of the two books diverge. While Superman follows the eponymous hero as he deals with General Zod, Supergirl, Superboy, and Krypto head off to deal with Gandelo.

I was very impressed with how all this was achieved. It’s not often that such a harmonious blending is pulled off.

And, as is always the case when Kevin Maguire is involved, this issue is a treat for the eyes, even though he pencils only the first five pages. Pansica’s work is grittier, but particularly well suited to the intense battle against the man who brought about Krypton’s destruction.

Not everything gets resolved by the end of the story, and I have a feeling there are more twists that will take place.

An excellent crossover issue, as this long story arc builds towards its finale.
