Ok, first things first. Kevin Maguire is not on the art for this issue. Evan Shaner is, though. I was disappointed in Maguire’s absence, but Shaner compensated for this very well. For the most part, the story is given a very light and breezy look, but there are a few panels in which a heavier tone is required, and Shaner effortlessly blends those with the overall mood. So I really cannot call this issue down in terms of art.
Story-wise this isn’t the greatest, but it’s also far from the worst it could possibly be. Supergirl winds up in a bar brawl deep in space, making some temporary enemies, and a new friend as well.
I also need to mention that Ambush Bug gets a very small part in this story. It’s a fun bit, not as chaotic as it might be, but good for a laugh.
By far the most interesting thing in the issue is Supergirl’s new friend, Z’nder Kol. He is a Coluan by birth, but orphaned and raised on a different planet. He’s not Brainiac 5, that’s for sure, but you can’t put a Coluan in front of Supergirl without teasing the readers with the potential for romance.
Supergirl doesn’t really acquire any new information about Rogol Zaar, but by the end of this issue she has reached the remains of Krypton, the scene of the crime, so to speak.
While I hope for Maguire’s return, I am perfectly content with Shaner filling in. And Andreyko never turns out a bad story. So even though this is not my favourite issue of Supergirl since the book was revived, it was still good enough for me.
