Supergirl battles the Karate Kids! Well, actually she doesn't. Once again, DC Comics has a cover that does not really reflect the contents of the book. This is happening a lot nowadays and clearly shows that things are not running so smoothly at the editorial offices. Anyway, in this issue, Supergirl and Karate Kid (singular) join forces against the monster cyborg Equus. But in a brief dream sequence, Supergirl remembers her meetings with another version of Karate Kid from another version of the Legion of Superheroes. This ties in this issue with the COUNTDOWN storyline and the "Lightning Saga" running in the Superman titles. If the reader is unfamiliar with these storylines, then he may not understand what is going on in this comic and may feel cheated that so many plotlines are going unresolved. This issue builds up the tension well but then lets it just drain away. The fight with Equus is halted abruptly. Then, Superman finally confronts Supergirl about how she endangered the president, only to give her a comforting pat on the shoulder. The art has a sleek, photo-realistic style to it which makes its characters more human but which also diminishes its superhumans so that they look like people at a costume party. The artists also have trouble conveying the impact of punches. It looks like Supergirl is standing there with her arms outstretched. And they still got Karate Kid's costume wrong! This just gets two stars out of five, a disappointment since the whole story looked so promising.
