A new story arc begins in Super Sons 13, as Damien Wayne and Jonathan Kent start going to the same school.

As with every issue of Super Sons, this one is packed with great dialogue by Tomasi. I am noticing how he basically makes the boys purer incarnations of their fathers’ distinctive qualities. Superboy has all the positivity of Superman, but with a childish naivety on top of it, while Damien has his father’s cold and brusque manner, heightened by teenage arrogance.

Carlo Barneri and Art Thibert do very good art on this tale, moving deftly between comedic scenes and intense ones.

Talia Al Ghul makes a return, and the story sets up Lois Lane’s involvement as well. Though Jonathan Kent knows a bit about Damien’s mother, we see that he has been kept in the dark about the extent of Damien’s training and past with the League of Assassins. He seems genuinely shocked and upset to learn that Damien has killed people, and when Damien dismisses it as happening a “whole other lifetime ago,” Kent’s response that Damien is only thirteen shows that he is having a hard time processing this news about his friend.

Considering that this issue is really just a set-up for the storyline about to start, it reads very well in and of itself. A lot of fun, promising more to come.
