Shade, the Changing Woman #5 Review

Another excellent issue of Shade, the Changing Woman.

Shade continues to have no heart, and Lopak and River are both on her trail. Shade’s role in this issue is actually pretty small. She spends most of it with her predecessor, and the narrative spends more time on Lopak, River, and Meghan.

That’s fine, each of these characters has been well developed, and each one is involved in a distinctive and engaging plot thread on their own. If anything, this reminds me of how well Peter Milligan handled the supporting cast when he was writing Shade, the Changing Man.

Of course, as you reach the end of this issue the reason the supporting cast from that book came to my mind will become clear. And gosh, what a chiller of a revelation it is.

This book is so reliable, in both storytelling and art, that I find myself searching for things to say about it. I don’t want to just recap the plot, but I also don’t want to keep repeating myself.

As such, I find myself now having to spend more time that I ought to on the one feature I am not caring for, the back up tale. In this issue, the Menagerie story, aside from having a different artist, has nothing about it that really distinguishes it from the main story. The scene could easily have been integrated into the story without losing any of its effect.

That is not to say the Menagerie pages are weak or anything. I am just looking for something to say other than “wow, I love this book.,” or “it’s so great to have a comic series that explores gender and sexuality in such a fluid and creative way,” or “my gosh that final scene!”  Oh, I basically already said that last one a few paragraphs up.

So geez, stop reading my review and just buy this already.
