Shade, the Changing Woman #3 Review

I enjoyed the Shade, the Changing Girl series well enough. It had some ups and downs, but overall I was pleased with it. In only three issues, Shade, the Changing Woman has pretty much blown the first series out of the water.

The storytelling, both in terms of script and art, is defter and more powerful. This issue begins with Shade throwing her heart away, literally. She also decides to spread her view, and take in others, by becoming various forms of reading material.

There are quite a few plots threads that develop while this is going on. The series continues to explore concepts of gender and sexuality, in fresh and original ways. It also shows a much darker side to the heroine, a desire for vengeance against those who have wronged her.

While Shade, the Changing Girl was weird and delightful, Shade, the Changing Woman is definitely more disturbing, both in the lead tale and the back-ups. I used the word heroine earlier, but really she is the protagonist, and not always the hero. The complexities of her personality are being explored now. I am glad the series shifted names, as this is a more mature book, and suits the shift from girl to woman.

Some of the images from this issue really resonated with me. Seeing Shade as a heartless scarecrow will probably stay with me forever.

A very strong issue, dark but enjoyable.
