In this issue, the Scoobies meet J’onn J’onzz, the Martian Manhunter. As an animated character, this is the Animated DCU version, with perhaps a layer of
Super Friends to help maintain than Hanna-Barbera flavor.
J’onn seeks their help in unmasking an imposter who is inciting extraterrestrials living on Earth to rise up and take over. Using his Martian abilities, he is able to hide from authorities fairly easily, but his friends, not so much. Said friends include other aliens, such as Starfire (the
Teen Titans Go version); Jemm, Son of Saturn; and Starman. In an amusing nod to long-time DC fans, much is made of the long and varied history of the Starman moniker. Thankfully, they don’t carry the joke over to Starfire as well.
I remember as a child watching
The New Scooby-Doo Movies (1972), which featured an assortment of guest stars who helps Mystery Inc. solve cases. One featured Batman and Robin in their pre-Super Friends days, and this issue was very much like that. Makes me wish for a Scooby Gang/Wendy, Marvin & Wonder Dog crossover. (Yes, that’s a hint.)
Artwork is appropriately cartoony, with flimsy logic in the villain’s unmasking, but that’s the nature of cartoons. If you want facts and logic, stick to documentaries.
