Peepland #1

Peepland #1 is a story well told, but so far has nothing that hasn’t been told before—sympathetic sex worker finds herself in more trouble than she bargained for, with a supporting cast of typical anonymous toughs and urban low-lifes.

In its defence the title assumes a mature reading audience—for its content, yes, but also for its pacing. It trusts you can keep track, makes you work to follow the pacing, and tells its story through showing as often as telling. The artistic detail by Camerini is vital, and her consistency of portrayal of characters, their expressions and body language, is refreshing among some cliché dialogue and plot. Her artistic themes, perspectives and settings are frequently reminiscent of the best of gritty Darick Robertson. The colouring, inking, and lettering can also be flatteringly compared to anything from the big-two—delightful to see from a small press.

One hopes that the writers have plans for the plot and characters beyond this standard crime story. That said, if you’re reading Peepland primarily for the peep aspect, it’s worth the cost of admission.
