I was not impressed. Up to this point, I had really been enjoying the second season of Krypton, so much more than the first. But the latest episode saw an event that all but killed it for me. I can’t reveal what it was, it’s too big of a spoiler. But it had a dire effect on my enjoyment of the episode.
That’s really unfortunate, since there were many things I did enjoy in this one. As usual, the acting remains very strong. Cameron Cuffe (Seg-El), Wallis Day (Nyssa), Ann Ogbomo (Jayna Zod), and Aaron Pierre (Dev-Em) all did excellent work. Colin Salmon (General Zod) made the most of the situation his character has found himself in. Zod is ruthless, but also convinced that the actions he is taking, no matter how horrible they may seem to others, are justified by his goal of preserving Kryptonian society.
Zod is still working on making Doomsday a weapon he can control. In this episode, his scientists work with Black Mercy extract. Black Mercy is a parasitic plant that gives those infected by it visions of their perfect lives. These hallucinations are so desirable that the victims are content to let the plant feed off them, rather than fighting back. It’s been used a few times in the comics, and on an episode of Supergirl a couple of seasons back.
The Black Mercy scenes are fun, partly because they are so disorienting. Characters we are familiar with are acting in such unusually cheery ways. The visuals are also extremely different, with everything white and brightly lit, in massive contrast to the way most of the show looks.
And I like the way the series seems to be building to having General Zod use Doomsday as his weapon to attack the rebels on Wegthor. In the comics, Wegthor was destroyed by Jax-Ur. It doesn’t look like Jax-Ur will be at fault this time, but I am expecting a similar fate for Krypton’s inhabited moon.
The fact that there was a fair amount to enjoy in this episode just made the other thing, the thing I will not mention, so much worse. It put a taint on the entire viewing experience, and decreased my enthusiasm for the last two episodes.
I just hate it when a show disappoints me like this.
