Kamandi Challenge #10 Review

Well, I am so far behind on my reviews I guess I don’t really need to worry about spoilers. So I can just go ahead and state that Kamandi gets re-united with his long lost mother in this issue.

It’s not one of the better issues of Kamandi Challenge, though. The art is fine, but in no way does it evoke Kirby, or Kamandi.

I did enjoy the sharks and the death worshippers, and I loved the use of anti-cortexin, a nice throwback to the original series.

But I think the problems with the overall concept are now beginning to mount. While each issue does work off of the end of the previous issue, there doesn’t seem to have been much effort at creating an overall story that is more than the sum of its parts.

That may not be possible in a book designed to have a different creative team each issue. I am not sure if each writer is required to have read all the previous stories. It certainly doesn’t feel like they did. There were plenty of elements set up in the first few issues which could have been built upon, but so many seem to have just been dropped by the wayside.

Now, to be fair, Kamandi’s quest for his parents was absolutely one of those elements. And it does get resolved in this issue. But the mother is in and out of the story so fast, and wearing such horrible body armour, that I just couldn’t enjoy her presence.

Ah well, I guess the upside is that next issue will have a brand new team, and I can just ignore this one.
