Justice League Dark #12 Review

Tynion takes the storyline for Justice League Dark both backwards and forwards in the latest issue, and Wonder Woman is central to both threads.

On the one side, Diana, along with Zatanna, return to face Dr Fate and the Lords of Order following their meeting with Mordru in the previous issue. On the other side, we see how Justice League Dark came into being.

While there is certainly more action in the present day part of the story, as the new Lords of Chaos are created, taking part in a visually dynamic battle with Dr Fate, the background part is just as interesting to read.

We learn how Wonder Woman approached the League about creating an offshoot to deal with magical menaces, proposing herself as leader of that team. I really loved the Flash trying to suggest a team of speedsters as another offshoot, and getting quickly shot down.

Batman is the most concerned about the effect this might have on Diana. And, indeed, the events taking place in the present illustrate exactly the fears that Batman had.

There are loads of guest stars and cameos in this issue. But then, that is exactly what I have come to expect from this series. One really has to credit Tynion for the way he keeps a story on track, and keeps the focus on the central characters, while at the same time finding space to add so many others, and manages to make the most out of their brief appearances.

And, of course, credit also must go to Bueno and Fernandez for not merely illustrating all these characters, but for keeping the darker mood for the book intact, even in the lighter moments of the story. And, so far as this issue is concerned, everything from the panel layouts to the camera angles to the altered costumes comes together so very well in the big battle scene.

This book just keeps topping my charts month after month. It can do no wrong.
