There are a few dark revelations about the DC Universe, and the magic users within it, in the latest issue of Justice League Dark.
We already knew that Dr Fate and the other Lords of Order were making trouble, and in this issue Khalid reveals just what they are up to, and why Nabu sealed his successor into a jar.
Zatanna also learns more about her father, and Zatara is made into a much more important figure in the development of DC’s magic users than had previously been the case
Sometimes these sorts of revelations go so much against established continuity that one has to strain to swallow them. That is not the case here. The darker side of Nabu and the Lords of Order was developed long ago, and nothing in the Zatara revision demands much of a reassessment of the venerable magician.
The main characters are still in the story. I may have given the impression that they aren’t even relevant. But there is a lot for them to process, and a deal offered at the conclusion that should have some interesting repercussions next issue.
Once again, this issue is easily carried along with very strong art. I particularly enjoyed Zatanna’s big spells, and the attack of the Lords of Order.
This is darn close to pushing out Shadowpact as my favourite DC magic team. All it has to do is conclude this first big storyline with a solid finale.
