I was impressed with the first issue of the new Justice League Dark, and this second issue makes me even more pleased with the direction the book is taking.

Looking for some insight and guidance, the fledgling team head to Dr Fate’s tower. This is rendered in all its moody glory, and overall the book is saturated with the right level of darkness to complement the tale.

Nabu, Kent Nelson, and even the more recent Fate, Khalid Nassour, either appear or are mentioned during this issue. There are some twists involving Fate, ones that perfectly suit what has been established about a Lord of Order who uses human hosts in order to function.

The conclusion of the issue is genuinely creepy. It takes an awful lot for a comic book to actually scare me, but I imagine a younger version of myself would have been freaked out at the closing images.

Swamp Thing and John Constantine have their own meeting as the main events take place, and we learn about a subplot with the elemental that will most certainly play out in coming issues. Once again, I have to comment the decision made by the writer, it’s a direction well suited to what has long been established with the character, and has potential for some very interesting stories.

Things are still getting started in this book, but everything indicates that Tynion has put a lot of thought into the characters he is going to use, and how to most effectively play with them.
