I haven’t been reviewing Justice League for a while. A few of the advance copies I was sent didn’t come through properly on my computer, and I found the story almost incomprehensible after missing those. But I strived to carry on reading the series, and finally am now able to make intelligent comments about it again. Well, at least I think my comments are intelligent. You might disagree.

Part of what made this issue so clear and easy for me was that it recaps the life of Jarro, the remaining part of Starro the Conqueror, who has become Batman’s latest sidekick. Actually, the story goes even further back than that, giving us insight into Starro’s history from before he ever faced the original League. And I really like that Redondo kept the appearance used back in R.E.B.E.L.S for Starro’s core intelligence.

Jarro winds up leading the League against Luthor’s Legion of Doom, and Snyder and Tynion make use of this sequence to recap the various cosmic forces that the League has encountered during this long story arc, and how Luthor has made use of these to free Perpetua, and lay the groundwork for his master plan, the Year of the Villain, now playing out across the DC universe.

Were the issue completely devoted to laying out what has come before, and setting up what is to come next, I would have been grateful, and praised the issue anyway. But this story goes further, as Jarro decides that he needs to become Starro once again in order to defeat Luthor. It makes for a very emotional climax to the issue. A couple of twists even follow that event, so I feel ok spoiling it, since you still won’t really know how things all play out.

As much as I hate the phrase, I have to admit this is a perfect jumping on point for new readers. You will get all you need to know about what has been taking place in the book, and be ready for the clearly major events that are about to unfold.
