I am really of two minds when it comes to the story in Justice League #17.
The story is really a team up between Lex Luthor and the Martian Manhunter, and delves into a past relationship between the two. There is a twist, but it’s easy to see coming, so I am not overly concerned about spoiling anything.
Taken on its own, or even as part of the larger storyline that has been running through this book, this is a good story. It develops both characters very well, has some emotionally powerful moments, and really makes one wonder how the events are going to affect forthcoming issues.
My problem with the story is that it hugely contradicts established continuity when it comes to the Martian Manhunter’s arrival on Earth, and his age. Now I will admit that these things have changed over the years. But in this specific case, there is a Martian Manhunter miniseries currently being released, and the backstory in Justice League 17 actively opposes the backstory in that one.
That’s some poor editing. Someone in DC really ought to have noticed this, and made some effort to co-ordinate the two stories.
I admit, I have some suspicions about this tale. The Martian Manhunter has extensive abilities to reshape the thoughts and memories of humans. Perhaps none of what we are told in this story is true. That would eliminate the continuity problems, but also make the Manhunter a particularly manipulative opponent.
Still, the issue is definitely worth reading, if only so that you can get your own take on this conundrum.
