House of Whispers #11 Review

This series just keeps getting better and better. Last issue saw Mistress Erzulie fighting for her life against Ananse, the god of stories. Erzulie tried some clever tricks, but Ananse was one step ahead of the game.

In this issue, Erzulie seems out of the game, but the battle has not ended. The Corinthian intends to lay claim to the House of Whispers, and has his own battle with Ananse.

I really wish I could spoil this. The Corinthian pulls off such a neat twist, one that gets illustrated so very well by Domo Stanton. It’s simple and elegant.

Not that everything winds up easy and solved by the end of the issue. No, there are even greater problems brewing.

Nalo Hopkinson and Dan Watters have made excellent use of Sandman elements in this story. I have already mentioned the Corinthian, who remains true to his character, while at the same time branching out from his usual routine. The Library of Dreams is also made use of in this tale, as we get to read some of the never written Dickens novel “Dodger in the Colonies.”

And, as usual, the series also makes excellent use of the realism parts, the scenes set in New Orleans, where everyone except the voodoo queen has forgotten Erzulie even existed.

It took a while for this series to get its bearings. Or perhaps I should say, it took me a while to get this series’ bearings. But now I’ve caught its tide, and am happily sailing away with it.
