There are some major developments in the latest issue of House of Whispers, something I certainly didn’t foresee taking place. I won’t give any hints, but it’s a shocker.

The story continues from the previous issue, with Erzulie and Ananse continuing their story battle. Erzulie isn’t faring so well, and decides to take control of Ananse’s story. It’s a daring proposition, which turns out to come with its own risks.

For a while I wasn’t too clear on exactly what was going on in this book, but I was enjoying the ride enough that it didn’t much matter to me. I believe things have gotten clearer. At least, they have for me, and I now feel I have a firm grip on how things are playing out, even if they are doing so in ways I didn’t expect.
What I did expect was that Hopkinson and Watters had a strong idea about what they were doing, and that has been amply confirmed.

As always, the art plays a big role in establishing the various realities and moods. There are stories within stories, events taking place in mystical realms and in reality. The art makes all the changes easy to follow, as every one of those different “locations” is visually quite distinct. The visuals glide harmoniously from gritty reality to mind bending fantasy, somehow without feeling any more jarring than the plot requires.

As I said, there is a big event in this, a spoiler I won’t spoil, which leaves me eagerly awaiting the next issue.
