House of Whispers #8 Review

Hopkinson, Watters, and Stanton deliver another highly entertaining issue of House of Whispers.

Like the previous issue, this one is more devoted to storytelling, although in this case the stakes are getting higher. The Corinthian, who was brought into the book last issue, is kept largely to the side, though I expect we will see more of him down the road. Or down the river, which might be a more fitting turn of phrase for this book.

The art in this one is absolutely exceptional. A few artists collaborate on the “finishes,” which help give different segments very contrasting moods. The story deftly carries us from humour to horror, with a fair share of human drama, and supernatural scheming, mixed in.

8 issues in one should have a good sense of the direction a series is taking. I’m still a bit at sea with this book, although that feels intentional. The House of Whispers is now a ship, and so this is going to take a different route than any House of Mystery or Secrets book. Right now, the ride itself is enjoyable, so I am not concerned about the ultimate direction.

That being said, the climax of this issue features a challenge, which will play out in the next issue, I’m sure. That might well help define the book, or at least the direction it will take.

Clever, engaging, and sometimes downright scary, House of Whispers once again delivers.
