Ok, first of all, I have to admit I think some of this book is going over my head.

Perhaps that is because I am not as familiar with the history of voodoo, and slavery in the US. Perhaps it’s because the story is not told as clearly as it might be. And perhaps it’s just cause I’m some white guy, and this is aiming to speak to a completely different crowd.

If it’s the first or the third, I’m cool with that. It just means I need to learn more. The second? Well, that would be the weakness of the writer. But honestly, I don’t think that’s the case.

The one and only bit of “evidence” that indicates that it might be is how good the art is.

I know that sounds strange. Follow me on this.

The art on this book is hypnotic. I find myself just staring at the illustrations, allowing them to consume me. So maybe, but I find it unlikely, my admiration for the story is based more on the art than the text.

Except I just don’t think that’s true. I loved this one, the backstory for Uncle Monday, the disturbing events for the sisters in New Orleans, and the way the events in the Dreaming, with Judge Gallows, are playing in to this story.

Nope, I guess it’s me, then.

I’m, in some fashion or another, not the best reader for this book. But that doesn’t mean I don’t love it.

This series is powerful, and the imagery really stays with one afterwards. And even though I always get the feeling that I am missing something, all that does is make me go back and read it again.

Rating: 8.5 /10
