This issue, we find out more on Birdman and the Herculoids. Birdman is sent on mission by his Nick Fury-type handler, Falcon 7 to investigate F.E.A.R. We discover the origin of the Herculoids and their human handlers as robots try to grab data from Planet Quasar. Will the robots succeed in distracting the Herculoids long enough to get the data they require to destroy them later?

First the Herculoids has great retro artwork by Aaron Lopresti inked by Karl Kesel. It’s a clean and classic adventure. I like this story about characters that I did not know before and who confused me last issue. There were so many characters that I had no clues about which teams they all belonged to. This story is a fill-in but in a way it was necessary for readers with limited knowledge of the characters. The themes of this story were oddly similar to Magnus Robot Fighter, including the retro robot design!

The Birdman story was fun and drawn by Steve Rude in all of his retro pseudo animated Alex Toth glory. Many people like to compare Rude to Toth but they are very different. Toth was cheap on lines and did not really try to polish and round off his characters and designs. There was always something edgy and raw in his work. Rude, is more polished and clean but perfect for Birdman. The updated look makes him look more like the Silver Age Hawkman! The Birdman story was good and like everything we’ve seen in this series so far. It was a clear action comic where the good guys are good and the bad guys are bad. We don’t see much of that in comics, and that is why Future Quest is such a fun comic.

Rating: 8 /10
