After spending a thrilling Sunday at the Toronto Fan Expo, I’ve loaded up on some DC announcements that will make fans squeal with delight.
Pencils by Ethan Van Scriver
First off, Geoff Johns and Ethan Van Scriver, the creative superteam behind the smash hit, Green Lantern: Rebirth, have announced that they will be working on a new GL story which is expected to ‘take it to the next level’.
As reported elsewhere, Johns also announced an All Star Batgirl comic featuring Barbara Gordon. As of press time, no artist was named.
Meanwhile, during a Batman sketch-off against David Finch, Van Scriver spoke at length about his love for Plastic Man. He described his desire to draw an original series, but his difficulties in finding an appropriate writer is tripping him up. Luckily, he’ll get to draw the character in issue #30 of Superman/Batman.
I’ve got video and audio clips of the DC panel, as well as tons of amazing photographs from the FanExpo show. Keep coming back to Comic Book Bin for more. I’ll be throwing content online all week.
Some tinier tidbits coming out of the DC camp:
- Jim Lee announced that he drew a really raunchy page involving Spartan and Voodoo from WildCATS. He was worried that it would run into trouble when crossing the Canadian border.
- Ethan Van Scriver likes drawing Kid Flash for fun.
- When Jim Lee is on the phone, he likes to draw random body parts, such as hands…
- Answering a fan’s question, Geoff Johns stated that Manhunter will not join the JSA, even though she is a legacy character.
- Ethan Van Scriver will be doing a Texas Chainsaw Massacre cover (presumably for Wildstorm).
- Johns and Van Scriver love Marvel’s Ghost Rider character.
- If Johns could bring a Marvel character to DC, he would choose the Hulk. He claims that DC does not have a Hulk-like character, and he says that Solomon Grundy doesn’t count.
- Van Scriver would like to do some Flash work in the future. He would also like to reinvent the Joker.
- When considering a project, Van Scriver considers the writer first, followed by the editor, and finally, the character.
- Van Scriver: “Alex Ross is awesome.”
