Ezra is an ageless child of the Black Sun, seeking to rid the world of the evil that has plagued her since childhood. The 10th Muse is Emma Sonnet, a warrior styled in the tradition of the mythological muses of Zeus. These two characters come crashing together in a crossover book that provides an ample display of action, gore, and gravity defying female bodies.
In seeking to eliminate Medusa, the longtime foe of the 10th Muse, Ezra risks undoing history. When the 10th Muse steps in to stop her, all hell breaks loose. It is only upon recognizing the need for cooperation that these two heroines can join forces in order to vanquish evil by defeating Medusa’s reptilian sisters.
Although O’Reilly’s dialogue is unimpressive in this issue, he clearly knows how to keep the action amped up. There is rarely a moment when characters stop to stand around and talk. The action sequences are deftly presented, but the character dialogue often forced me to wince. “It’s go time” is not what a hero should utter when approaching the enemy. It smacks of cheesiness and exemplifies much of the other limp lines sprinkled throughout this book. If the characters were not as lavishly drawn as they are, I would have been tempted to toss this book aside.
The artwork of Vicente Cifuentes is a little cartoony, but he clearly knows how to draw curvy women well. He takes a hideous mythological character like Medusa, and makes her an attractive woman that just happens to suffer from a bad case of snake-head (and green skin, and scales). Ezra and the 10th Muse look gorgeous, and they show a wide range of expressions throughout the book. The colourist, Eve, seems to have a thing about making chests extra shiny, but this doesn’t detract from any sense of grittiness created when blood washes across the fight arena.
The use of splash pages helps amplify the action, and a 14 panel double page spread provides some intense warfare featuring a battle between the heroes and two threatening enemies.
The lack of ads makes this book extra reader friendly, as does the stunning rear inside cover shot of Alexandra Janicek, the Ezra model search winner. She is featured in a photo variant cover for this very issue.
Like watching supple young women prance around with swords, slashing baddies? Then pick this up. If you are looking for a smart book that features stellar writing and a dazzling plot, you will want to look elsewhere.
5.5/10
