I was really excited to see a new issue of Doom Patrol listed, and even more encouraged by the wonderful cover for the story. My expectations, based on the previous Doom Patrol stories by Way and Derington, were very high.

So I hate to have to admit that I found this story a real let down.

The cover plays fair, though. This is a pure fantasy adventure, with the Reynolds family taking the lead. They go through a series of challenges in what seems to be an alternate realm, although it’s also pretty clear that this is just a game. At the end, they wind up having to do it for real.

I enjoyed the subplots with the Reynolds family in earlier issues, and wouldn’t have minded seeing them again, not at all.

But the Reynolds family is not the Doom Patrol. At least, not the Doom Patrol I expected or wanted.

I really hope that the remainder of the team pop up again, and this is not just some weird new version of the Doom Patrol. I have loved the group in most of their incarnations, but this is not what I want out of the title. Not at all.
