Doom Patrol #11 Review

I am so very sad. Doom Patrol is at an end. I think I will cry.

Gerard Way and Nick Derington cram an awful lot into this issue, and they have to be commended for that. On the down side, there are sooo very many explanations, and they rush past at breakneck speed in order to make sure everything gets resolved.

It doesn’t make for the best issue of the run. I have derived so much enjoyment from the craziness in this series, which gets muted by the drive to clean everything up for the finale. Still, I prefer having things tidily wound up to leaving too much hanging.

This issue also crosses over, in a way, with this week’s Justice League of America, with Ahl, the God of Heroes. Rita Farr makes a return. The villain behind the Milk Wars gets his origin explained, and comes to a fitting end. Mr Nobody and the Brotherhood of Nada plot line comes to an enjoyable conclusion as well. Even Lucius and his parents get their story arc dealt with.

That’s a heck of a lot to shove into one story. Perhaps it’s not as balanced as it might have been, but I am in a forgiving mood. Way and Derington executed such a fine version of the Doom Patrol that they have earned the right to have any weaknesses in this issue overlooked, for the greater good.

I truly hope that the collected editions of this series sell well enough to warrant a return. I need Doom Patrol in my life. We all do. Even Mr Nobody.
