Collected Hutch Owen Volume 1
By Andy Doan
February 17, 2008 - 20:00
This novel contains four collected books by the artist/writer Tom
Hart. Each story follows the tribulations of a man who has dedicated
his life to battling the establishment. This is a comedy about social
consciousness.
Hutch Owens (the hero) sets his sites on four of
the main evils of capitalist society, property ownership, the marketing
of consumer goods, the stock market and printed media. He defends the
world against the destruction of green space, culture loss and a brain
dead magazine publisher. Each story is filled with lots of jokesaimed
at modern life as well as a few life lessons for a man that seems
pretty stuck in his ways.
The artwork throughout the book is
very simple and flat. It does seem to have a bit of style but I would
think for most part it takes a distant second to the actual story. This
doesn't end up being too big of a problem. The stories are driven be
dialog and humor, the art is well balanced against that.
The
bottom line is, Hutch Owens is worth a read. I found the main character
a little too annoying to be endearing. Near the end I found the
practicability a bit amusing. Hutch is kind of like the anti-Hank Hill
in that way, he embodies a point of view so well it's funny seeing him
in situations where you know how he's going to react.
