Supergirl hires Lobo to transport her to Rann in an effort to regain the lost Book of Destiny. Naturally, this can only lead to a series of misadventures. Amazingly, in this day of grim-n-gritty and large-scale death, DC actually serves up a fun road trip that has the cast pulling off good jokes without looking stupid or acting out of character. In fact, Waid actually remembers that Lobo has some powers beyond being a super-strong thug. Aside from Supergirl and Lobo, we also see Blue Beetle and Batman in action against the Fatal Five, encounter Destiny of the Endless and finally discover how the Book of Fate fell into the hands of compulsive gamblers and cheap crooks. The art is amazing, especially considering how complex the story is and how small so many of the panels are. In far too many cases, DC stories with huge casts and numerous plot twists, end up getting collapsing in a mess at the end but so far, this story is still looking very good. This was all achieved without numerous crossovers or the brutal deaths of about seven once-popular characters. How very un-DC. Maybe that is why this issue gets five out of five stars.
