Rose and Titania argue over Tim Hunter in the latest issue of Books of Magic. Tim has fallen completely under the enchanting spell of Faerie, and is content to remain there forever.

While I enjoy the discussions in this issue, and the art for the most part, I have to admit that I do not care at all for how Titania is rendered. She just doesn’t seem to have any aura of power or “queenliness” to her.

Still, I did enjoy the issue. For me, the best scene involves the police coming to Tim Hunter’s house to check on his absence from school, and their interaction with his father.

It becomes clear by the end of the issue that both Titania and Rose sincerely believe they have Tim’s best interests in mind, which makes the conflict between the women more interesting. And it makes it more difficult for a reader to easily side with either of them.

Still, we are at issue 8, and I am feeling like something big needs to happen. There are indications that the book is moving there, and a lot of groundwork has been laid.

My early excitement about this series has abated a bit, though. The whole visit to Faerie feels like a bit of a detour, rather than an actual development. I guess it really depends on what comes next, what payoff there is to these last few issues.

But I am engaged enough to keep going and find out.
